The Fourth Root: Rest & Sleep

Quality sleep is what I call a non-negotiable in my personal and professional life. There is so much power innately in each of us that when proper sleep is prioritized, the whole body benefits. I will share a personal story related to my husband's sleep habits. When he was on active duty in the military, he was likened to Batman, not for the cool points of saving the community (although that was in there too), this nickname came to him because he was sleeping so little and was there to "work" at all hours. Sleeping only 3 to 4 hours a night! For years! I, for years, encouraged sleep as a priority, and the nature of the job/work often rose to the top. They don't call the military "selfless service" for nothing. Fast forward to 3 years post his departure from the military, and he is finally sleeping for 7-8 hours a night!  This too took intention and small shifts to his daily habits, and he is the first to usually share about the huge positive impact this has made on his overall body function, from recovery to focus.

The Healing Power of Stillness

Rest isn’t a luxury—it’s a biological necessity. While you sleep, your body repairs itself, your brain processes information, and your hormones reset. Without deep rest, even the best nutrition and exercise fall short.

Why Sleep Matters

Lack of sleep is linked to poor focus, weakened immunity, increased cravings, and higher stress levels. Quality sleep supports every aspect of wellness, from mood to metabolism.

Tips for Deeper Rest

  • Create a calming bedtime routine

  • Limit screens and blue light before bed

  • Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet

  • Practice gentle breathing or stretching at night

  • Stay consistent with sleep and wake times

Gentle Challenge

Commit to powering down devices 1 hour before bed for the next 7 nights. Notice how this impacts your quality of sleep and your energy the next day.
